How land tax works
Land tax is a yearly state tax on the unimproved value of land you own, which is the land without the house or other buildings on it. Each state adds up all the taxable land you own in that state and applies its own scale, so owning two investment properties in the same state can cost more than owning one in each of two states. Your home, and usually farmland, is exempt. Trusts, companies and foreign owners often pay higher rates or surcharges.
